Sometimes, the only available option is to balance a rotor in situ, i.e. in the installed condition. Some rotors, such as e.g. blowers or fans, will only operate smoothly with a low level vibrations over a limited period of time. In the course of operation, potentially hazardous unbalances may develop.

In specific cases, smooth running of a rotor can only be achieved by balancing it in the installed condition. Dismantling and transporting these large rotors is often extremely time-consuming, labour- and cost-intensive, making field balancing the more efficient solution.
